Depending on the entity that manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, two types can be distinguished:

• First-party cookies: These are sent to the user’s device from a server or domain managed by the website owner and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
• Third-party cookies: These are sent to the user’s device from a server or domain not managed by the website owner but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

If cookies are installed from a server or domain managed by the website owner but the information collected is managed by a third party, they cannot be considered first-party cookies.

A second classification exists depending on how long the cookies remain stored in the user’s browser, which may be:

• Session cookies: Designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website. They are typically used to store information only for the duration of a single service request made by the user (e.g. a list of purchased products).
• Persistent cookies: Data remains stored on the user’s device and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the cookie owner, ranging from a few minutes to several years.

Lastly, cookies can be classified by their purpose:

• Technical cookies: Allow the user to navigate through a website, platform or application and use the different options or services available, such as controlling data traffic and communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted areas, remembering items in a shopping cart, completing the purchase process, registering for events, using security features, storing multimedia content or sharing content via social networks.
• Customisation cookies: Allow the user to access the service with certain predefined general characteristics based on criteria such as language, browser type, regional configuration, etc.
• Analytics cookies: Enable the monitoring and analysis of user behaviour on websites linked to such cookies. The information collected is used to measure website activity and create browsing profiles to make improvements based on user service usage data.
• Advertising cookies: Enable the most effective management of advertising spaces.
• Behavioural advertising cookies: Store information on user behaviour obtained through continuous observation of browsing habits, enabling the creation of specific profiles to display advertising accordingly.
• External social media cookies: Allow visitors to interact with content from various social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), generated only for users of those networks. The terms of use for these cookies and the information they collect are governed by the respective social media platform’s privacy policy.
