Depending on who manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, there are two types:

• First-party cookies: These are sent to the user’s device from a domain managed by the website editor and from which the requested service is provided.
• Third-party cookies: These are sent to the user’s device from a domain that is not managed by the editor, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

If the cookies are installed from a domain managed by the editor but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, they are not considered first-party cookies.

There is also a second classification based on the amount of time the cookies remain stored in the user’s browser:

• Session cookies: These are designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website. They are typically used to store information that is only needed to provide the service requested by the user on a single occasion (e.g., a list of purchased products).

• Persistent cookies: The data remain stored on the device and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the cookie’s controller, which can range from a few minutes to several years.

Finally, there is another classification based on the purpose for which the data obtained are processed:

• Technical cookies: These allow the user to navigate a website, platform, or application and use the various options or services that exist on it, such as traffic and data communication control, session identification, access to restricted areas, remembering items in a shopping cart, completing a purchase, signing up for events, using security elements while browsing, storing content for video or audio broadcasting, or sharing content via social media.

• Personalization cookies: These allow the user to access the service with some general predefined features based on a series of criteria in the user’s device such as language, type of browser used to access the service, regional configuration, etc.

• Analytics cookies: These allow the controller to monitor and analyze the behavior of users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookie is used to measure the activity of websites, applications, or platforms, and to create user browsing profiles, with the goal of improving services based on user data analysis.

• Advertising cookies: These allow for the most efficient management possible of advertising spaces.

• Behavioral advertising cookies: These store information on users’ behavior obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, which enables the development of a specific profile to display advertising based on it.

• External social media cookies: These are used so visitors can interact with content from different social platforms (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and are generated only for users of those social networks. The terms of use and collected information are governed by the privacy policy of the respective social media platform.
